This is the story of Wes, a white guy, who lives in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles. He has a simple life, working at a car wash by day, and singing in a Korean karaoke club at night. Wes gets the chance to purchase the car wash but needs to come up with the cash quickly. He is soon approached my Mrs. Tam, the owner of the karaoke bar, with an interesting offer. She will pay him $25,000 to marry Soo Jin, a local girl.Soo Jin is a member of the Nang family. The Nang family has been in a generations long feud with the Doko family. The Dokos have sworn to wipe out the Nangs, and do so by making sure that no children are born into the family. Soo Jin is the last of the Nang line, and if she doesn't have children, the family will die out. The Dokos have killed her first 5 husbands already. Wes agrees to marry her and be husband number 6. They hope that because he is white, the Dokos will hesitate to kill him.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The writing style was clear and understandable. The story moved along at a fast pace and was interesting the whole way through. As Wes' life gets more complicated, the story gets more enjoyable. Based on the strength of this book, I am ready to read more from this author.

Koreatown Blues is a blast. Rogers lights a match on page one, and the pace never lets up until (after a surprising twist near the end) his story draws to a satisfying conclusion. Wes Norgaard is a likeable hero, an ordinary guy who’s easy to identify with and root for. Just as enjoyable are the sharply drawn secondary characters, both those arrayed against Wes and those on his side. Reminiscent of the paperback pulp originals that flourished in the 50s, Rogers’ storytelling skills and his taut, wiry style gallop along at a furious pace and propel you to keep turning pages. Koreatown Blues is a thoroughly fun ride. I’m glad I took it--you might enjoy taking it too.
I love, love, love the movie Straw Dogs, from Sam Peckinpah, and felt like Koreatown Blues was heading in that direction. Instead, I was bolloxed by the ending - so unexpected. As much as I love books, I'm also a fan of movies, and this had the feel of a well-plotted Jim Jarmusch film, which is kind of a contradiction in itself. I totally recommend this book.I ordered the paperback. Love e-books for their convenience, but there's still something really appealing about a well-designed book. This is the real thing. Don't back off from this one.
Wes Norgaard is an easy going kind of guy, not out to make the big bucks, content to enjoy life's happiness when it comes. But he is drawn into temptation by the opportunity to buy the car wash he manages in Koreatown. When other sources for the down payment dry up, Wes, knowing full well that it is an insane thing to do, marries a doomed Korean woman whose relatives give him the money he needs in hopes that marriage to a non-Korean will be enough to deflect the death sentence hanging over the bride.
Of course, this does not work out very well. Wes tries to make peace between fighting clans and otherwise tries to keep his wife and possibly himself from being murdered.
The clever solution he arrives at is so thoroughly modern that neither the Koreans nor I could anticipate it. Very fun.

Koreatown Blues by Mark Rogers is a quick and satisfying read.
Wes is a young man who gets to find his place in life. He wants to buy the car wash he is working at.
Ms Tan, the owner of a bar, where he is customer, offers him the money needed. All he has to do is marry a woman, she selected for him. But this is no immigration scam, the young woman is Korean, but also a born American. The problem is, there is a blood feud, and Wes now is in the middle of it.
The story starts with a bang at the end of the first chapter, establishing the suspense, that will not cease until the end.
There are some nice plot twist, even if I suspected some before, until the solution is found.
The book is very entertaining with some pulpy overtones from time to time. But it is not hard-boiled. All in all you will meet some nice people, trying to help Wes and the solution will let you smile.
